Ways to Handle Potty Training Issues
- by Admin
There may be times where you and your child go through some undesirable misunderstanding and battle not only on changing diapers but also during potty training. This is normal but it does not necessarily mean that you have to tolerate this to happen. You, as parents, should see to it that your child is trained to learn things as early as possible so that he will not undergo difficulty when he grows up.
Teaching a child to do this and that is not easy especially when he refuses to cooperate. However, you may avoid this by following some ways to handle potty training issues. However, before that, you have to determine what issues are to be dealt with. You have to identify the area or the problem where you can apply the solution so it will be easier for you the moment you start training your child. So what we will do is to write down the issues followed by the solution.
These are the issues:
* He is too resistant. Your child seems to refuse you time after time when you start training him to use the potty. He either shouts, cries or just run away from you. This goes to show that he is not interested in learning and therefore, he will just escape from you.
Solution: Let him be. Do not force the child to go to the potty if he does not want to but doing this does not mean you will not do your part anymore. You will also make him go to the potty but in a different approach. First, let him be familiar with potty by showing it to him everyday. In short, orient him. Let him pass by it and introduce it to him. Perhaps you can say, “Meet Mr. Potty. He is a very good friend to children like you.” In this manner it will be easier for him to slowly accept and realize that potty is really a good friend. Then, he will not be afraid to use it for the first time.
* He is inconsistent. You might already have trained your child smoothly but the next day or so, he starts showing some inconsistencies. He doesn’t want to use the potty anymore and he even makes himself “busy” with his toys or other stuff. He showed progress the last time you trained him but now he seems to change and lose interest.
Solution: Having trained your child does not mean that you are already successful because there are moments when he will not go through it the next day. What you have to do is remind him everyday to use the potty when he is about to need it. You may start by asking him if he needs to go then encourage him to go to the potty because it is happily waiting for him there.
* He is a diaper dependent. Everyday he wears a diaper so, of course, he will not use the potty.
Solution: Stop the use of diaper so that he will really find the initiative to use the potty. Make him independent and willing.
In sum, since you are doing all this for the benefit of your child, you will be able to mold and enhance his growth and development.
